Timbaland "Carry Out"

I thought this video was going to be about food.

It’s not, though a few slices of cake do make an appearance.

I like Timbaland, and I haven’t grown tired of his shtick yet. Still, as far as sexual innuendo goes, “carry out” is a very vague metaphor. Also, when did Justin Timberlake turn into Eminem? Please take your cap off JT.

The best line in the video is Timbaland’s: “I keep you open all night like you’re IHOP.” Nice.

Speaking of IHOP, even though the franchise made its name flipping flapjacks, it serves great food for lunch and dinner too. I usually get the pot roast. Sometimes they serve it lukewarm (DON’T send it back if this happens) but if it comes to your table piping hot, get ready to enjoy!

It’s significantly better than Denny’s and Friendly’s. Quick note, Friendly’s actual tag line is “Where Ice Cream Makes the Meal.” If that’s true, then why would anyone order the meal? The restaurant itself admits its non-dessert fare is crappy. I can just imagine the waiter saying, “is everything alright? I’m sure it’s not, but please just hang in there until we give you some of our patently mediocre ice cream. It makes the meal!”

OK, sorry, back to Timbaland. Doesn’t he look like he’s always secretly eating something in this video?

Steel Panther

Sorry for the lack of updates this weekend, i have been deathly uninspired. However, this afternoon I thought i’d love to write a blog but wondered what on earth I could possibly write about, then I had the rather genius idea of writing about what music i’ve been listening to! How that took me three days to come up with I don’t know (:

http://www.losanjealous.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/steel_panther.jpg

Steel Panther

When writing an article on Steel Panther you must make the decision of whether to approach it from the “SP are a band frozen in time in the 1980s and thawed in 2008 and have come to rock your faces off” stance or from the “Steel Panther are a glam rock parody band highly regarded on the sunset strip for their nostalgia inducing live shows”, i’m torn between the two to be honest (:

Basically, and quite shockingly- I found this band through myspace… Yeah it happens, it’s 2010 but these guys are all about reminding you of how you shouldn’t leave the past behind. That’s not an insult at all, Steel Panther are like an EVEN MORE fun version of motley crue, like after reading Dirt and the heroin diaries over the winter i’ve got loads of time for MC but kinda wished they weren’t so serious some times and if there’s one thing you can call these guys (and there are certainly many things you can call these guys..) it isn’t “serious”.

It’s quite rare that you end up laughing at a song so much that you have to relisten to it afterwards to catch up on everything you missed. I’d just like to present some of Steel Panther’s lyricism, these from the mind blowingly brilliant death to all but metal.

Eminem can suck it, so can Dr. Dre

They can suck each other just because they’re gay

They can suck a dick, they can lick a sack

Everybody shout, “Heavy metal’s back!”

50 Cent’s a fag, so is Kanye West

Shooting hot sperm on each others’ chest

Vocally the lead singer, who is a mix of Axl Rose and Justin Hawkins from the Darkness (who guests on party all day), is brilliant. Musically it’s above generic like it’s quite inventive and with such “genius” lyrics you can’t help but love these guys. It would be a huge mistake to take them too seriously as they’re fun and just that, imagine seeing these guys live. Impossible to not be in a great mood after listening to these guys, definately worth the 4MB of space on your ipod (:

Dr. Dre Connects With Hewlett-Packard For $40 Million Ad Campaign

Legendary Hip-Hop producer Dr. Dre has been tapped to be a part of a $40 million dollar Hewlett-Packard advertising campaign.

The eight-week campaign is titled “Let’s Be Amazing” and features Dr. Dre in his recording studio expounding on the benefits of the HP Beats computing system.

In addition to the commercial featuring the Aftermath CEO, comedian Rhys Darby and photographer Annie Leibovitz among others are also scheduled to be featured in the campaign.

“The laptop is the new stereo for a lot of people and that’s why we’re putting out this computer with incredible sound,” Dr. Dre said of his new notebook PC.

The spots are part of Hewlett-Packard’s attempt to redefine itself to their consumer base, in addition to giving the company some “personality and distinction.”

The producer’s HP ENVY 15 Beats limited edition notebook PC is a collaboration between Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine of Interscope and HP’s engineers.

NGU / Eminem 'The Set Back' & 50 Cent 'Demolish

One of four covers for NGU Records. This one’s Eminem ‘The Set Back’ – I had full control over how it turned out… so I couldn’t resist not doing some neon lines :)

Read on for 50’s cover

Here’s the 50 Cent ‘Demolish’ cover for NGU records. NY’s been a little bashed up… but not too much.

Two more coming soon…

U2 Take a Stand At The Oscars With 'The Hands That Built America'

It’s March 7 and the Oscars air tonight on ABC.

U2 won’t be on hand at this year’s ceremony. It Might Get Loud seemed like a shoo-in for Best Documentary and “Winter” had a decent shot at Best Original Song, but neither earned nominations. What’s more is that the Best Song nominees won’t even perform at tonight’s ceremony.

The situation was a bit different in 2003, when U2 took the stage at the Oscars with “The Hands That Built America.” Commissioned for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, “Hands” is initially set in the same time period as the film, tracing the evolving relationship between Ireland and America from the late 1800s to the modern day.

Beginning just days before the 2003 Oscars, America’s controversial invasion of Iraq marked a jolt in that bond’s growth. The fallout from Bono’s choice of words upon winning the Golden Globe for Best Original Song two months earlier demanded he watch his tongue, but U2 refused to suppress their distaste for recent events.

During the final verse, which originally referenced the 2001 World Trade Center attacks, Bono substituted two new lines about the war: “In the spring, a yellow cloud on a desert skyline / Some father’s son, is it his or is it mine?” The sentiment dovetails with the rest of the song, introducing a set of “hands” America now more deeply recognizes as influential in its the continual building and rebuilding, while also emphasizing the grave sense of confusion that arrives after one conflict breeds another.

For a coda, Larry drums out the first five beats of “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” reminding listeners, “I won’t heed the battle call.”

U2 lost Best Original Song to Eminem that night and have yet to have another crack at the category. But live being “where we live,” U2 made the most of “Hands,” both at the Oscars and after. Although it hasn’t been heard since the end of the 2005-2006 Vertigo Tour, the song had a healthy life, cropping up in full several times and giving eerie new vigor to “Bullet the Blue Sky” as a snippet.

Behind The Scenes: Lil' Wayne - "Drop The World" (ft. Eminem)

Okay…..I know what you’re thinking: MORE YOUNG MONEY? Well the answer to that is YES! So over the past month or so Lil’ Wayne has made more than 7 videos set for future releases. This just being one of the standout tracks off of his Rebirth album, he reached out to hip-hop legend Eminem to help him make a monster record. The visual for the song seems to be going in the “Anarchy/Revolution” route, such as Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” did. But from the behind the scenes look I’m highly anticipating the finished product for this track.

Festival blues

Since the first set of festival line ups started to leak about 3 weeks ago, with the news that this years Isle of White festival will be headlined by none other than The Strokes and Jay Zed with Sunday’s special secret still yet to be announced, it seems all the festive big boys can’t help but tease us with bits of their line ups too.

Today we found out that Eminem will be playing at Scotland’s T in the Park and, if he dosnt look at anyone in Irish customs the wrong way, Oxygen festival as well. Along with that we were told Roxy Music & Grace Jones will be at this years Lovebox festival alongside Dizzee Rascal (One was a bigger story than the other)

As annoying as it might be, right now its becoming quite hard not to think about the musical festivities. Christ, we still haven’t even got through the Easter weekend yet, let alone Reading.

So before you start telling yourself you’re going to sort your tickets in before the Thursday (which includes Glastonbury) morning why not let out your festival blues by sharing them with the world (potentially – I can assure you I don’t get 06987583623 odd hits every blog, not even Ollie Russian gets that many)

I’m looking for festival stories. Sure whilst you write them you might get a bit teary eyed, but at least you’ve got it out the way for the next month when another wave of bands are shoved down our throats.

They don’t have to be long, short but funny please, they can be sent anonymously or you can take full credit for ’swapping Alex Turners glass of cider for a pint of piss’.

Send them to Jordanjoice@googlemail.com or post a reply on the bottom of this page.

The best will be featured in a blog and/or my latest project – a glossy magazine.

Happy holidays.

Dre & Game

Sorry 50, this somehow get’s me excited. Yeah, Game can be a “hip-hop groupie” at times. Yeah, he was on Change of Heart back in the day. Yeah, the “G-Unot” records got old quick. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I hated the fact that all he did was quote and name drop other emcees.

But then I started to see why this dude was on. He has a certain type of appeal. He makes mood music. Honest music. He doesn’t hide the fact that he’s a fan first. There is something to be said about that. A lot of dudes are just too green to do that.

When he left Aftermath I, honestly, didn’t think he would make it pass one album. Somehow, Game was able to keep his respect and high production value going. His last album, L.A.X., was probably my favorite. He embodies West Coast hood culture and, besides Snoop, not many can do that on an mainstream level.

The good news is…he’s back with Dr. Dre and Aftermath! I think they make a dope pair. Dre knows how to gel with certain artist (didn’t work with Rakim though). Dre and Eminem, Dre and 50 cent, Dre and Snoop. I think Dre and Game will be a good pairing.

The West Coast gangster sh@t just can’t get duplicated. I, like many other fans, love it. Being an NYC born emcee and fan of hip-hop, it’s not always about the East Coast. I’m not sure how many tracks Dre will have on this album (officially), but I am looking forward to it.

The Game “R.E.D.” drops in April of 2010.

Here is the rumored tracklisting:

1-Intro (Produced by Drumma Boy)

2-Ambulance Feat. Young Jeezy (Produced By Maestro)

3-Fundamental Feat. Scarface (Produced by DJ Premier)

4-Hype (Produced by Dr.Dre)

10-Back On That (Produced by 1500′&Nothin’)

Eminem Back Together With Ex-Wife Kim?

No relationship in the music industry, let alone the world, has been more tumultuous than the marriage between Eminem and former wife Kim.

The rapper’s rise to fame partially came at her sacrifice as Shady would lyrically shatter her image and use her constantly as a means to express his anger and thoughts of homicide.

“Kim”

Behind closed doors, however, Em has continued to try and reconcile their differences as reports are stating that the two have actually come together, again, and are expecting another child.

After a divorce, then repairing their relationship again while Marshall was going through rehab just to break up again, sources are saying that the two are allegedly back together.

Representatives for Shady, however, are singing a completely different tune than what is traveling around the Internet trying to nip the potential problem in the bud.

“Contrary to false rumors spread by unreliable tabloids, Marshall and Kim Mathers are not romantically reunited in any way, nor are they expecting a child together.”

The rep also provided some clarity to the actual situation between the rapper and his former wife Kim.

“They are a divorced couple who share custody of their daugther and maintain a friendly relationship.”

Clearly some parts of history are best left in the past and as it stands now, the only relationship that Shady will have with his former wife is in raising their children together.

Check the clip of Kim finally speaking on relationship with Eminem.

I pick the world up and I drop it on your head

Lil’ Wayne’s rock-autotune album, Rebirth, has seen more delays than Nicole Scherzinger’s Her Name is Nicole. Due to a shipping mistake by Amazon, a couple of copies made their way to people who pre-ordered the album, thus it leaked on the internet. The final, official album will apparently have other tracks, but I don’t know, I think Wayne should just move on and see it for the disaster it was. I listened to the album, and it’s not great, but some of the songs are intense and pretty good. You’re probably not gonna like it but this song, “Drop The World” features Eminem and is perfect to listen to if you’re in a bad mood. It’s intense, it’s tough, it’s pretty effing cool. Other tracks to check out: “Get A Life”, “Prom Queen” and “Running”.

10 Most Shocking Grammy Awards Moments

The annual Grammy Awards seems like a boring award show compared to the American Music Awards, but it does contain a lot controversial and shocking moments which make the AMAs look tame.  Check out Billboard magazine’s top ten list of the most shocking moments at the Grammys.

10.  50 Cent Interrupts Evanescence’s Win

Long before Kanye West made awards show stage crashing jump the shark, 50 Cent experimented with the form. Nobody really knows why the “In Da Club” rapper — was he that sure he’d won? — strolled up to the podium during Evanesence’s 2004 Best new Artist acceptance speech, least of all lead singer Amy Lee, who just shrugged off the interruption and went on to thank her supporters “in addition to 50 Cent.”

9. Michael Jackson Talks “Stolen Childhood” (1993)

As a former child star turned international icon, the Michael Jackson who stepped up to accept a Grammy Legend award in 1993 was just becoming the eccentric recluse known more for his oddities than his music. He helped speed the recalibration with his “Grammy Legend” acceptance speech that night. Standing next to his sister Janet, Michael spun a haunting story of the Jacksons’ abnormal youth, telling the world that normal childhood pleasures “were exchanged for hard work, struggle and pain.” Yet the very personal revelations felt scripted and calculated, and when he remarked, “It feels good to be thought of as a person, not as a personality,” he may have already known that that’s what he would eventually become.

8. Tupac Reunites Kiss (1996)

“We need to shock the people, so let’s shock the people,” 1996 Grammy presenter Tupac Shakur declared. And shocked they were. Seconds later, the rapper was joined onstage by Kiss, whose reunion was essentially announced at that jaw-dropping moment. Appearing true-to-form as Demon, Starchild, Space Ace and Cat Man, the four original members of the rock band took the stage — fully made-up and costumed for the first time in 15 years — and roaring audience members were genuinely surprised, and at least a little bit amused at the spectacle of Tupac surrounded by tongue-wagging old dudes in spandex and platform boots.

7. Sinead Doesn’t Want What She Has Got (1990)

The ever-controversial Sinead O’Connor, the same singer who tore up a photo of the Pope during a live SNL performance, made a splash at the 1990 Grammys — by refusing to show up. According to O’Connor, her absence from the ceremony and subsequent refusal to accept her Best Alternative Music Performance trophy for “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” was her way of boycotting the 33rd annual awards. When queried about the decision, she maintained that her reasoning stemmed from the award show’s extreme commercialization. The real question is: Did anyone miss her!?

6. J-Lo’s Barely-There Dress (2000)

Jennifer Lopez caused a national commotion when she and fellow presenter David Duchovny came onstage to give out the first award of the 2000 Grammys. Her green Versace gown, with a “neckline” that plunged past her navel and a hemline threatening indecent exposure, looked more like a music video getup than an awards show dress. J.Lo’s dignity was only salvaged by a bikini-area brooch holding the entire creation together. The audience whooped and catcalled to show their appreciation, while Duchovny stepped aside to let J.Lo have the spotlight.

5. Elton & Eminem Duet (2001)

Did Elton John turn a blind, queer eye at the 2001 Grammys when he appeared on stage with accused homophobe Eminem for a rendition of the rapper’s nominated “Stan”? That’s certainly what many of his homosexual peers thought, as they howled in protest despite Mathers and John’s amazing performance of the song. The friendly hug at the end probably fanned the flames of their anger a bit too.

4. Ol’ Dirty Stage Crasher (1998)

In 1998, Ol’ Dirty Bastard proved once and for all that Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothin’ to… well, you know. After the group lost to Puff Daddy for Hip-Hop Album of the Year, ODB took to the stage and defended his Clan during an acceptance speech for a category the group wasn’t even nominated in. Confused? So was Shawn Colvin. She couldn’t even bask in glow of her win for Song of the Year before ODB began his bizarre ranting. For the record, ODB wanted people everywhere to be sure to know that Wu-Tang is “for the children.”

3. Chris Brown Assaults Rihanna (2009)

Rihanna and Chris Brown’s reign at the top of the charts was a solid one, but all it took for their personal lives to crumble was a text message. The night before the 2009 awards, the couple attended Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party in good spirits and health. But the evening took an ugly turn when reports  surfaced that Brown had beeninvolved in the assault of an unnamed woman. When a photo of Rihanna’s battered face leaked online shortly thereafter, the truth became all too clear. Announced via a terse press release from the Recording Academy, the sudden cancellation of the duo’s Grammy appearances just hours before the ceremony ignited the firestorm of coverage of the incident. A disagreement over a text message turned violent, and Rihanna was left bruised and bloodied – as was Brown’s career.

2. Phoney Vanilli (1990)

Milli Vanilli couldn’t blame this one on the rain: the German duo with a string of hits in the late ’80s won the 1990 Grammy for Best New Artist, but the celebration didn’t last long. In November of that year, it was revealed that singers Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan hadn’t sung at all — the two were merely the faces on the cover of the multi-platinum debut album. For the first and only time ever, a Grammy award was revoked. When asked by reporters how they expected anyone to take them seriously, Pilatus just laughed and said, “Ha! Good question.”

1.  Dylan Gets Soy Bombed (1998)

Vegetarian terrorist? Spanglish Egomaniac? When a backup dancer decided to take center stage during Bob Dylan’s 1998 performance of his Grammy nominated “Love Sick,” he made Grammy history. Ripping off his shirt to reveal the puzzling phrase “Soy Bomb” scrawled across his bare chest, the gyrating performer got away with almost 40 seconds of spastic dancing on international television before security realized something was amiss — and straight-up wacky. Even Dylan himself barely gave him a scowl. The dancer was lucky that his Grammy explosion didn’t cost him; NARAS declined to press charges.

I wonder what will happen tomorrow.  You have any bets?  What will Kanye West do?

Thanks to my older brother Thomas who played a lot of these songs when I was growing up. Most of these songs I took from him awhile back. I grew up with a lot of different musical genres playing in my house but the hip-hop influence on me has totally come from him…so thanks Thomas :)A lot of my brother’s rap music I don’t like but I’ve gotten to know the songs and artists and styles that I do like. I tend to like stuff that’s catchy and has a melody and has a good beat to dance to….and a little raunch doesn’t hurt. haha

And I just had to put a memorable quote with each song…whether it be raunchy or funny or catchy or whatever…most of the songs have several memorable ones, so I couldn’t help but point out at least one that I think of from the song.

I’ll put the list on here soon. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy (possibly discovering a fun new song you didn’t have on your ipod before :D ). I might do my top of other genres too but we’ll see.

Eminem and Shady Records may go Indie?

As long as Eminem has been recording music, he has been on Interscope Records. His deal with the label stems from Dr. Dre’s relationship that has lasted for nearly nineteen years. After Dre left Ruthless Records, he and Suge Knight proposed the idea of Death Row Records to the head of Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine. A hardcore rock fan, Iovine loved the sound of the music and he gave them a chance.

Dr. Dre would spend the next five years with Death Row until he had enough of the way that his partner, Suge Knight was going around treating people. Right after he finished working on the first 1996 album from Tupac, All Eyez On Me, Dr. Dre would leave Death Row. He would take with him artists that he had been working with during his Death Row days. They made up the roster of Aftermath Entertainment, also distributed by Interscope Records.

The first three years of Aftermath got off to a rocky start and Dr. Dre’s legacy was at stake for a little while. All of this changed when he heard a white rapper from Detroit named Eminem rap for the first time. Dr. Dre listened to his demo and he ended up flying Dre to Los Angeles and the trip resulted in Em signing to Aftermath Entertainment. Before the signing of Eminem, releases from the label failed to cross the platinum mark. However, after Eminem released his debut album, he would sell 9 million copies.

The success of Eminem’s first album led to Jimmy Iovine reaching out to him directly. He granted Em with his own label, Shady Records. Soon, Eminem signed himself to a joint-venture deal with Aftermath. In 2000, he signed D12, a group of his childhood friends to the label and he also signed other Detroit-area rappers to the label. Starting in 2002, Eminem and Shady became the cornerstone of Interscope Records. Later in the year, he would solidify his status as a legend, when he signed 50 Cent.

When Dr. Dre signed Eminem to Aftermath, he put his own rap career on hold. When Eminem signed 50 Cent, he made a similar move. However, unlike his boss, Eminem announced a comeback. After he made the announcement, he acted upon it. The result was Eminem releasing his first album in five years, Relapse. Led by the hit single, “We Made You,” Eminem took over the rap game one more time.

Initially, Eminem had planned to release two new albums in 2009. The first half of the year was supposed to be headlined by Relapse. The second half of the year was supposed to be headlined by Relapse 2. When Eminem recorded the first album, he created enough music for multiple albums. Because of this, he had hoped to package the music that was left off of the initial album to create another album.

However, Interscope Records did not like this idea. They forced Eminem to scrap the album and begin to record another album. To honor the promise that Eminem made to his fans about releasing two albums in 2009, they allowed him to re-release Relapse as Relapse: Refill. This will serve as the official preview of Relapse 2. The fact that Interscope Records forced him to re-record his album enraged Eminem.

For the past few years, Eminem has been growing impatient with the Interscope label. It is possible that he has finally had enough. As long ago as December 2009, there have been rumors of Eminem possibly moving his Shady Records to an independent label. In 2008, he had signed up-and-coming rapper, Charles Hamilton to the label. He was hailed as one of the rappers of the future. But, a feud with Soulja Boy led to him being dropped by Shady/Interscope and Jimmy Iovine allowed his debut album to leak to the internet.

With all of this and some other issues, Eminem may just pack his bags and go the independent route for his future music releases.

Why Eminem is the greatest

Now I know there are many who fall in with the Great ones… Here’s why Em is one of th”em”. First off, great name. Who thinks of that stuff? Emifuckinem that’s who. He spits his shine on every rhyme, everytime. That’s Em. He raps about being who the fuck he is and fuck you if you can’t handle that and guess what…now this is what sets him apart from the crowd..I BELIEVE HIM. It’s not like diggity do, but it is. It really is. He shows a human side despite his Godzilla like rage and I commend him for that. Most rappers are all guns and glory and one or two slow jams for the ladies…So cookie-cutter, I just get tired uh dat..juno.

sigh. I don’t know where Mr. Mathers gets his inspiration, but it’s got to be some place/thing really cool. I mean REAAAALLY awsome, cuz I don’t believe it was ONLY the weed that made him great. I’m sure it helped a lot, but Em is a true artist that I’m sure would be even meaner if he were ever to record off his meds. Or who knows, maybe he’d go country music star on us just to say “Fuck you all, once again”

Eminem-Homophobia; what's his deal?

A friend pointed out that between the various posts I seem to have tackled the subject of homophobia and hip hop. This is not a first for me, freshman year in college I wrote a rap entitled “homophobia is wack” for a obligatory expository writing class. In said rap I proclaimed that MC’s could definitely lose the homophobia and still be cool. “Naw, it’s part of hip hop culture,” my friend counters. But Kanye ( before the no-homo bit) had said he’s not a homophobe and everyone liked him(until the taylor siwft thing) and the jury is still out on Lil’ Wayne, right ? (see previous post)

And then there’s Eminem. Up until now i’ve considered him too ridiculous to even worry about. I didn’t buy his albums, didn’t lose much sleep over it. I don’t care whether he’s serious or not, as much as I don’t really want to listen to him talking shit about fags. Sample lyrics in “Kill You”: “You faggots keep eggin’ me on/til I have you at knifepoint, then you beg me to stop?/SHUT UP! Give me your hands and feet/I said SHUT UP when I’m talkin’ to you/YOU HEAR ME? ANSWER ME!”. I can live without it. But my friend is a fan and the more I was forced to listen in his car the more confusing Eminem became. The dude is way gay. A internet search reveals lots of people believe him to be a closet case. On his album Relapse, Homo-erotic ennuendo abound. I hear his newest release- Refill is even gayer. What’s his deal? Self-hating? On Relapse, he talks about being molested- who knows seriously or not. I know some homophobes who got molested as kids and have turn their worry over that making them gay into prejudice. In the end I care much less about what his personal feelings are and more about what effect all this might have on the fourteen year olds listening to it. On the other hand I listened to Nine Inch Nails talking about I wanna fuck you like an animal and I didnt become a deviant right? oh wait.

Lil Wayne - Drop The World (Ft. Eminem)

Rebirth Cover Art

So my homie PLAYBWAH has been talking a lot lately about the fact that Wayne’s Rebirth is trash, but the one bright spot is his track featuring Eminem entitled “Drop the World.” So I took it upon myself to see what all the hype was about. Truth be told, if this is the best Rebirth has to offer, I think I’ll pass. I’m not against rock, I’m just against how Lil Wayne does rock. Anyway, here’s the track… decide for yourself.

Top 40 songs, 2000-09: 9. "Stan" by Eminem (2000)

It was 2000, and I burned “The Marshall Mathers LP” from a friend. It was the day after the CD dropped, and everyone in school wanted it. This was high school, and heck, Eminem was the man. And for a growing and emotional little white boy, Eminem was the cure.

First couple songs were good, a little much, but good. Then came “Stan.” The Dido sample was a break from the turgid beats Eminem was known to drop. Yeah, the beats came in, but “Stan” was very different. Combine the way the verses grow more intense and sad, and the way Em plays the role of Stan, then comes back to play himself, with the construction of the lyrics … well, I listened to it repeatedly, obsessively. I knew pretty early on that “Stan” was Eminem’s masterpiece. It was, maybe, the best rap song I’d ever heard.

To boot, “Stan” is the definitive crazy-fan song. Nowhere else to go from there. And after all the dirt clears on Eminem’s career, we’ll always point back to “Stan.” That’s the greatness.

Re-Emergence and Top Songs of 2009

Well hello there. Like every other post I seem to have written I’ll note how long it has been since my last post. But unlike the other times, it really has been a while this time due to neglect through being busy with final year of uni and then just plain forgetfulness and lazyness since, or the fact I’m now in the regular human working world so free time tends to consist of sleeping or eating, but there you go.

So towards the end of the year I started getting reminiscent and nostalgic about the year and decade just passed. To say they have both gone quickly is an understatement as I enter the 3rd decade proper of my life. In particular, I have been reminiscing about the music which has inspired, moved and motivated me in the past decade. A decade in which I moved from being fairly naive in my musical taste to now having a wonderfully eclectic taste. All of this, along with a couple of other reasons, made me want to get back into the blog world to write down and chronicle all of this exciting music. And I will really try to blog regularly from now on; more than likely reviewing new albums, movies and gigs that appear in my life etc. as well as probably venting my spleen every now and then on topical issues which happen to be grinding my gears or floating my boat at that particular time (that enough cliches for ya?). In fact, I was going to start my resurgence with a vent about X-Factor and stealing the Christmas number 1 spot but just before I was going to write, the wonderful Rage Christmas miracle facebook campaign had just gathered all of its momentum so my points would have just been an echo of everything being said at the time.

But anyway, here goes, to kick off my new blogging resurgence is the best songs of last year in my humble opinion. Nothing too complicated for now but will return soon for albums of the year and decade and maybe a review of Sherlock Holmes which I’m going to see in a couple of hours.

10. Dizzee Rascal – Holiday

  • Best of his recent No. 1 tunes. Absolute trance freakout halfway through kills me!

9. Jay-Z – Run This Town

  • Thanks to a show-stopping verse from Kanye, this was one of the standouts of the Blueprint III.

8. Paolo Nutini – Pencil Full Of Lead

  • This just appeared out of nowhere this year and cannot fail to make you happy when listening to it.

7. Oasis – Falling Down (A Monstrous Bubble Mix)

  • Hard to fully explain, but expands on the subtle quality of the original to make a 22-minute journey of beauty, confusion and serenity.

6. Just Jack – The Day I Died

  • A massive grower, I just love the story and the imagery that it conjures up.

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Skeletons

  • Such a beautiful and peaceful microcosm of the stunning album, which, from this song, should really be re-branded It’s Bliss, because it really is.

4. Wiley – Take That (ft. Chew Fu)

  • This track is an absolute monster! No other way to describe it.

3. Them Crooked Vultures – No-one Loves Me and Neither Do I

  • The slow, swaggering build to this song only heightens the immenseness of the climaxing mammoth riff.

2. Eminem – Beautiful

  • This really crept up on me at the end of the year. Surprising really to have a track of Relapse on here because the album was underwhelming, but this song, like a good tin of Ronseal, does exactly as is says on the tin!

1. Drake ft. Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem – Forever

  • Howe could this not be the top tune. 3 of the best rappers around at the moment trying their hardest to steal the limelight. Eminems verse almost steals the show but they all put in a hard lyric. And don’t get me started as to why we Brits aren’t allowed the proper version over here; I mean why get rid of Kanyes bit completely. But ah well, it’s still massive!

Right, so there you go, that’s whats been on my radar all year. I’ll be back soon with retrospective album blogs. And here is a Spotify playlist of all the songs I could find on there just so you can hear as well as read about what music I’ve been digging.
